It is incredibly easy to get caught up in the endless to-do lists of running a business and forget to pause when something wonderful happens.

Recently, the opening chapters of my middle-grade children's novel were longlisted for the prestigious Faber and Faber Action! Prize. For any writer, getting validation from a major, traditional publishing house like Faber and Faber is a massive milestone. It serves as a powerful reminder of why we must celebrate our successes.

While I frequently advise others to acknowledge their triumphs, I am often guilty of rushing on to the next task myself. A recent conversation with my business coach, Bayo Igoh, reminded me how vital these moments are. Embracing our achievements provides the emotional fuel and stamina required to keep chasing our long-term ambitions. Because breaking into traditional publishing is fiercely competitive, this recognition has given me a tremendous boost in confidence and the drive to push my writing even further.

Injecting Passion into Your Daily Work

We spend a significant portion of our lives working, so it makes perfect sense to build a career or business that genuinely brings us happiness. Identifying your core passions and weaving them into your professional life allows you to find true satisfaction in the daily process rather than just the final outcome.

This philosophy forms a core theme of my book, 'Sales Before Marketing', which was published last year. I chose to practice exactly what I preach by structuring my life to give my own writing a central focus.

If you find that you no longer enjoy your current business or daily employment, it might be time to evaluate what would actually fulfil you. However, transitioning shouldn't be done on a whim. Leaving one path for another requires a thoughtful strategy and a clear plan rather than a reckless leap of faith.

How Forced Change Unlocks New Horizons

Sometimes, major shifts are thrust upon us when we least expect or desire them. In these moments, I firmly believe that with disruption comes fresh opportunity, even if it is difficult to see at the time.

A decade ago, I was forced to pivot my career and focus entirely on local work. This wasn't a strategic choice; it was a necessity born from reaching a point of severe emotional and mental exhaustion. I had hit the wall of burnout completely, and my health required me to slow down and alter my direction.

Though it was a frightening time, that forced shift turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions of my professional life. It led me to discover the immense power of community, which was exactly what had been missing from my career for years.

The local business ecosystem across Bromley and Croydon is spectacular—filled with collaborative, encouraging, and principled individuals who share my outlook. Over the last ten years, I have established deep roots, strong commercial relationships, and meaningful friendships here.

The Commercial Value of Connecting Locally

This deep immersion in building relationships naturally turned me into an active, dedicated networker. The critical role that effective networking plays for small business owners is another cornerstone of my book, and it has evolved into an area where I now actively guide others through focused consultancy, training, and structured courses.

I am incredibly fortunate to have transformed something I love doing into a profitable service that delivers genuine value to the B2B sector. For small businesses, learning to network properly is one of the most efficient avenues for driving sales. Seeing clients gain confidence and watching their businesses thrive as a direct result of these skills is exceptionally rewarding.

Looking Ahead: The Next Creative Chapter

While finding a supportive local community was an unexpected blessing ten years ago, dedicating time to creative writing was a completely deliberate choice. Since making that commitment during my recovery from burnout, my literary output has grown substantially.

Over the past decade, I have developed a diverse portfolio of work, including six children's picture books that are currently awaiting the right publishing home, a poetry collection, and my self-published business book, 'Sales Before Marketing', which continues to receive wonderful feedback from readers.

Alongside these sits my newly longlisted middle-grade novel. This latest milestone has solidified my determination to elevate my creative writing efforts. There is a lot more to come on this journey, and I look forward to sharing future updates and successes with you.
