Beyond the Hustle: 3 Tips to Avoid Burnout and Enjoy the Business Journey
Table of Contents
Running a small business can be incredibly rewarding, but let’s be honest: it can also be tough. And when it’s tough, it’s stressful.
I know this from my own lived experience, and I know it from a decade of networking and talking to fellow business owners. While I am primarily known for sales and marketing strategy, I am equally passionate about helping others avoid the burnout or breakdown that can come from the relentless pressure of entrepreneurship.
I am not a qualified coach or a "mentor" in the traditional sense, but I have 25 years of experience and a few hard-won lessons to share. Here are my first three tips for maintaining a healthy business mindset.
1. Success is the Journey, Not the Finish Line
If your only goal is to "reach the summit" or "cross the finishing line," you are setting yourself up for constant stress and potential disappointment. In business, the finishing line has a habit of moving. The more you grow, the further away it seems. There is a lot to be said for building a business you actually enjoy being in every day. If you love the work, it doesn't matter if the line keeps moving. When you enjoy the journey, the work stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like a lifestyle you’ve chosen.
2. Don’t Set the Bar Too High
Setting incredibly difficult goals often leads to a sense of failure. While it’s good to have long-distance ambitions, the most effective way to reach them is through consistent, small steps.Think of it like a football match: instead of trying to score in one massive swoop from the midfield, try dribbling the ball down the pitch, slowly and surely, until you reach the goal. Realistic, achievable goals keep your momentum high and your stress levels low.
3. Remind Yourself of What You HAVE Achieved
When things aren't working out as planned, it can feel like a dark cloud is hanging over you. In these moments, it is vital to remind yourself of how far you’ve come.Take a moment to list at least five things—big or small—that you have achieved in the last 12 months. You will likely be surprised at your progress. Reminding yourself of your wins makes temporary difficulties feel exactly like that: temporary. It gives you the renewed positivity needed to move forward productively.
Combining Strategy with Mindset
When I work with clients through consultancy or workshops to improve their sales and marketing, I always incorporate mindset and approach. You cannot have a successful business strategy without a healthy business owner behind it.I explore these themes alongside practical sales foundations in my book, Sales Before Marketing.
If you’re feeling the pressure, remember: you’ve achieved more than you think.
